2024 Pre-Season Up To Date

It's been a busy month since our last post. So, let's dive in head first shall we?

January 8th, 2024, 40 days post the dismissal of Mark Lowry, Indy announced Sean McAuley as the fifth head coach in club history. McAuley hails from Sheffield, England. He’s served as an assistant coach in MLS since 2012. Portland Timbers, Orlando City, & Minnesota United have been places he’s called “home” prior to Indy. Last season we took over as interim head coach for Minnesota. As an assistant, he has helped spurred his clubs to 1 MLS Cup championship, 1 Conference Final, and 2 Western Conference regular season leaders. Prior to coming stateside as a coach, he was back across the pond with Halifax Town & Sheffield Wednesday. Even serving as interim head coach with Sheffield Wednesday for a few seasons. His playing career includes a 15-year senior career with Manchester United. He is no stranger to the USL, as he played for the Timbers back in 2002 when they were a part of the USL A League. Frankly, that’s about all we know on the new boss.

Now with him “having the reigns” from day 1 for the first time, it will be interesting to see how things go. He has been quoted already as saying “I don’t buy into the ‘it’s going to take two or three years to turn anything around.’” Needless to say, with an unproven head coach, this year should be an interesting one.

As far as players go, since the announcement of McAuley, Roberto Molina (returning,) Elliot Collier (returning to Indy following a stent with San Diego,) Max Schneider (signed from St. Louis,) & Douglas Martinez Jr (returning,) have all been announced. How does that impact the numbers in the roster? 6 defenders, 5 midfielders, 4 forwards, & still just 1 goalkeeper. Open tryouts are taking place at the end of this week, January 25-26, 2024.  Possibly the most notable open tryout participant to make it onto the senior team back in 2014, the man himself, Don Smart. So, it is possible that McAuley could be waiting for the open tryouts before signing on more players. Or, at the time of writing this, there could be offers out there that are just waiting for the i’s to be dotted & t’s be crossed. As always we refer all our readers to ensure they are following Indy Eleven on all social media platforms for the most up to date information.

We also have a preseason schedule! The boys in blue will head out to Pittsburgh on February 6th for their first preseason match. This match as been reported by Pittsburgh Riverhound social media, as being open to the public. As for Indy, they will have just 2 of their 5-home preseason matches open to the public. Saturday February 10th, the boys in blue will take on Chicago Fire 2 & on Sunday February 18th they will take on Columbus Crew 2. Both will be open to the public. Other preseason opponents include Indiana Wesleyan University, Lexington SC, Detroit City, & Forward Madison. Lexington & Pittsburgh are the only road games. All home preseason matches will be played at Grand Park, inside the event center. Which lays home to our 2023 USL W League champions. For more information on the preseason, head on over to indyeleven.com.
